Th. Juwé

Th. Juwé appears to be an obscure early 20th-century German photographer (or possibly a pseudonym for one), primarily known today through their contributions to Weimar-era erotica and fetish photography. Their name surfaces almost exclusively in connection with flagellation-themed imagery, depictions of corporal punishment, spanking, and sadomasochistic motifs, that aligned with the bold sexual explorations of the late 1920s and early 1930s in Germany. Little is documented about Juwé’s personal life, biography, or broader oeuvre beyond this niche; they are not a mainstream figure like contemporaries such as Manassé or Louis Malteste. Instead, Juwé represents one of many anonymous or pseudonymous creators whose work was curated into scholarly (yet scandalous) publications during the brief window of sexual liberalism before the Nazi regime’s crackdowns.

Juwé’s photographs were reproduced as illustrations in Ernst Schertel’s seminal four-volume work Der Flagellantismus als literarisches Motiv (Flagellantism as a Literary Motif), published serially by Parthenon Verlag in Leipzig between 1929 and 1932.

  1. Hi Karen,

Thanks for the latest pieces – Juwé and Le Blanc. Interesting as always, and some very striking images. I couldn’t help but notice that the lead image in the Le Blanc piece – the woman bent over the end of the bed with her ankles bound – also appears in the Juwé piece. In fact, the two sets of photographs have a very similar feel to them, and I wondered whether they were two pseudonyms for the same photographer?

    Just a thought . . .

    Best wishes as ever,

    Stephen

    1. Hello Stephen

Thank you so much for your critical view. I have to admit that sometimes I overlook sharing the same photos in different galleries so I will look into it. It could very well be that they were the same photographers, they are only named in the publications by Ernst Schertel and not anywhere else.

I am going to look into it, and I am also adding more photographers to the collection.

      Enjoy your weekend
      Karen

    2. I can’t say for sure if the photographer was the same. In cases like this I try to compare details from the photos, models, the room, wallpaper, etc and I could not find photos that had the same background. Which does not mean that they cannot be from the same photographer, some things just remain a mystery.
