Henri Oltramare

Henri Oltramare is the name under which a group of academic and orientalist nude studies from the late 19th and early 20th century is commonly attributed. The photographs are frequently linked to the monogram “HO” and appear in auction catalogues and private collections under this designation.

A reader kindly asked about the sources for the biographical details in this post. The information was compiled from various secondary online sources on early erotic and academic photography. Primary archival evidence for the life of “Henri Oltramare” (dates, training in Geneva, Paris studio, etc.) remains scarce and uncertain.

The photographs themselves continue to be attributed in the market and by collectors to the “HO / Henri Oltramare” group on stylistic and monogram grounds. Further research is welcome.

From Academic Nudes to More Explicit Imagery

Works attributed to Oltramare (or the HO monogram) include soft-focus, classically posed academic nudes that circulated in the early 20th century for artists’ studies, private albums, and the postcard trade. Many of these images show the polished lighting and carefully composed studio setups typical of the period.

The Orientalist Series

A number of prints attributed to the same hand explore orientalist themes: veiled figures, chains, harem-like settings, and scenes that sit closer to erotic or fetish imagery. These photographs share technical characteristics often associated with the HO group, rich tonal range, dramatic side-lighting, and painted studio backdrops. The same models appear to recur across both the more classical and the orientalist images.

Between Art and Taboo

Like much erotic photography of the era, these images occupied a grey zone between acceptable “académies” and more private, discreetly distributed material. They were never widely exhibited publicly at the time and reached a limited clientele of collectors.

Later Appearance on the Market

Additional prints attributed to this photographer have surfaced in recent decades through private collections and the auction market. Their relative scarcity and the technical quality of the better examples have made them of interest to collectors of early erotic and fetish photography.
